Because Eve sprung a leak between her cheeks that she called a mouth, and from this new place erupted all the words that she’d stored up until they turned to lava inside her and volcanoed out: I am not your maid. Not tonight. Get your own damn beer. Because God heard her and shook his head. Not the lemon or the grape, he whispered to the serpent, but the apple. Big enough to close the hole.
Sarah Freligh is the author of eight books, including Sad Math, winner of the 2014 Moon City Press Poetry Prize, Hereafter, winner of the 2024 Bath Novella-in-Flash Contest, and the recently-released Other Emergencies.
