Holly Chilton

Nature on the Edge of Darkness

Artist’s Statement

The thread that unites these pieces of work is an interest in the natural world, and our place in it, as humans. I sometimes wonder whether wildlife will step in and stop us in our strange destruction.

I am interested in subverting traditional stories and narratives - in creating a 'pretty' image that contains an edge, or a darkness. I have lately been thinking a lot about mythical creatures, like the Jackalope, the Skvader, and the Wendigo. I wonder if we can, in this contemporary world, find a way to make sense of the senseless, through folklore and storytelling.

These works are largely done in pencil and watercolour.
