Grimluck Series
Sabrina Cleary
Artist Statement:
Grimluck first appeared as a Post-It Note sketch while I waited for my English students to finish a unit test. The quiet, robed creature needed a place to exist, so I put it on a tiny island. Immediately, Grimluck became a character with a story to tell through landscapes, interiors, and ordinary moments of stillness.
Although I’m primarily a creative writer, I allow each project to guide the form. It was obvious that Grimluck’s emotional resonance should not be expressed through words. The autonomous, itinerant freelancer insisted on a visual medium as unique as itself.
The six-piece Grimluck series was created digitally in Microsoft Fresh Paint using simulated oil on canvas. I mixed my own palette of colors, and every brushstroke was completed with a Logitech Wireless Trackball M570. My visual art influences are Ed Emberly, Bob Ross, and Edward Hopper.
